What is Raman Spectroscopy?
A quick introduction
In simple terms, a Raman spectrometer assembly uses a laser to focus photons – and thus energy – onto a small spot on a sample. The photons interact with the different molecular groups of the substance by elevating their energy state. When the molecule relaxes, it releases that very energy by emiting a tiny fraction of characteristic light: the Raman scattering. When we filter out the excitation light – meaning the laser source – we are left with our signal, which can then be guided into a spectrometer and subsequently plotted into a graph, leaving us with a characteristic spectrum.
