Please Note

I’d like to note that this project, along with the documentation, is still a work in progress – though functional. Please be aware, that most time is spent printing the parts and even more so, adjusting the various components and aligning the beam, which can be quite cumbersome for the first times. If you plan to 3d-print all parts on an FDM-Printer, it’s helpful to already have a good understanding of your printer and slicer software, have it calibrated and levelled, and having established print parameters dialled in, to achieve best results in terms of dimensional accuracy and repeatability within your hardware’s limitations.

Considerations on Material & Manufacturing

FDM, SLA,SLS or CNC?

While SLA is an obvious choice for its precision and detail, since I only own an FDM-Printer, and a CNC router is still kind of uncommon, even for many enthusiasts, I tried to make it work using the Bambu P1S. A well squared and calibrated 3-Axis-CNC is, of course, incredibly beneficial and could entirely substitute the manufacture of all of the otherwise printed components, while simultaneously offering the superior option of using higher strength materials. I did use my Shapeoko-CNC to mill the baseplate, onto which all parts are screwed. But again, this is not necessary! Nowadays you can have these parts ordered for fairly cheap – in which case having it made via SLS can be a solid, lower cost option, than CNC-milled aluminium, acrylic or wood. The entire assembly greatly benefits from high precision and dimensional accuracy, so try as best as you can achieve within your means.

Takeaways

It is possible to make it work on entirely 3d-printed parts, although I would recommend getting at least the baseplate milled or you might, at worst, need an additional adjustment option to get the alignment right in the final stages or encounter more difficulties along the way. It is easier to get the horizontal and vertical alignment of the laser beam, and consequentially Raman-signal, right, so use that to your advantage during manufacturing. (The KM100 precision mounts used, are mostly for angular adjustment of the beam or its incidence on the optical part, not the vertical and horizontal axis. Nonetheless, XY-Translation-Mounts can still facilitate the alignment or offset dimensional faults and can be bought or DIY’d relatively easily.)

  1. CNC (Aluminium)
  2. SLS (Nylon)
  3. SLA
  4. FDM (PETG-CF / Nylon)

PETG-CF

Easy and fast to print, while benefitting from the stiffness of the added carbon fibres. It is also matte, compared to regular, more reflective PETG filament, which makes it more suitable at mitigating stray reflections.

0.18mm Layers

Allows for quick prints, adequate resolution on the Z-axis but still mitigating potential clogging caused by the carbon fibers. When using a different filament on a 0.4mm nozzle, the layer height is ideally kept to the smallest value possible.

0.6mm Nozzle

Go-to nozzle size for anything abrasive and often the safest option when printing filaments with added particles. 0.4mm is arguably better but comes with a risk of clogging. When using another dimensionally stable filament, it is advised to go with the smaller nozzle.
